“No One Is Safe” – Ssenyonyi Raises Alarm Over Human Rights Abuses, Questions President Museveni on Muhoozi

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, has challenged President Yoweri Museveni to explain why no action has been taken against Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba despite repeated accusations of threats, human rights violations, and disregard for the rule of law.

Speaking amid growing concerns about human rights in Uganda, Ssenyonyi said the problem has gone beyond politics and is now affecting people from all walks of life.

He noted that clergy members, journalists, civil society activists, opposition supporters, and even members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have reportedly faced arrests, abductions, intimidation, and other forms of mistreatment.

Ssenyonyi warned that human rights abuses should not be viewed as an opposition issue, arguing that every Ugandan is at risk regardless of political affiliation.

“No one is safe,” he said, calling on citizens to treat the matter as a national concern that threatens the rights and freedoms of all Ugandans.

The opposition leader also questioned the silence of key institutions, including the Uganda Human Rights Commission, at a time when public concern over alleged abuse of power continues to grow.

He further pointed to past remarks by former minister Gen. Kahinda Otafiire regarding extrajudicial killings, saying such warnings should not be ignored.

His comments come in the wake of recent controversies, including the arrest of former Kampala Lord Mayor and opposition lawyer Erias Lukwago.

Ssenyonyi also argued that if Gen. Muhoozi intends to actively engage in politics, he should first resign from the army and pursue his political ambitions as a civilian.

The remarks are likely to fuel further debate over human rights, accountability, and the role of military officers in Uganda’s political landscape.
