Janet Museveni’s Absence Raises Questions as New Cabinet Takes Oath

The absence of First Lady Janet Museveni from the vetting process and the swearing-in of President Yoweri Museveni’s new Cabinet has drawn public attention and fueled speculation about her health.

Janet Museveni, who was reappointed Minister of Education and Sports, did not appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting. Despite requests for her to participate virtually, the committee was unable to consider her nomination.

Out of the 82 Cabinet nominees presented for approval, Parliament vetted and cleared 80. One nominee, Dr. Lawrence Muganga, was reportedly blocked over citizenship concerns, while Janet Museveni’s case remains pending.

The development was highlighted on the front page of the Daily Monitor on Monday, June 8, as President Museveni’s 83-member Cabinet was sworn in.

Her absence has reignited public discussion following her failure to attend several recent high-profile events, including the President’s inauguration ceremony. While government officials have previously said the First Lady is recovering and in good condition, no official update has been provided regarding her absence from the vetting process.

The situation has prompted mixed reactions from the public. Some Ugandans have expressed concern about her wellbeing, while others have urged respect for her privacy.

For now, it remains unclear when Janet Museveni will appear before the Appointments Committee and formally take up her ministerial position in the new Cabinet.
