Fresh Claims Emerge Over Erias Lukwago’s Treatment in Detention as Health Concerns Grow

Fresh controversy has erupted over the detention of former Kampala Lord Mayor and opposition lawyer Erias Lukwago, after his legal team raised serious concerns about his treatment and health condition while in custody.

His lawyer, Medard Ssegona, told journalists on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Mankidye Magistrate’s Court that Lukwago was allegedly subjected to harsh conditions that worsened his medical state.

Ssegona claimed that Lukwago was forcibly shaved using an unsanitized machine and was given a diet of posho and beans, despite having a medically prescribed dietary plan.

He further alleged that the food provided aggravated Lukwago’s condition, raising fresh concerns over whether he is receiving adequate healthcare while in detention.

Erias Lukwago, a prominent opposition figure and defense lawyer for Dr. Kizza Besigye in an ongoing treason case, was arrested by security operatives at his home on June 15, 2026. He was later charged with misprision of treason and presented in court.

The allegations have sparked renewed debate over the treatment of detainees in Uganda, particularly regarding access to legal counsel, family contact, and medical care. Questions have also been raised about reports that Lukwago was initially held at an undisclosed location before his court appearance.

Authorities have so far not issued an official response to the claims made by his legal team.
