The uncertainty surrounding the reported arrest of former Kampala Lord Mayor and opposition lawyer Erias Lukwago deepened on Monday after Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said he had no knowledge of the incident.
Speaking to journalists on June 15, 2026, Rusoke stated that police had not received any official information regarding Lukwago’s alleged arrest.
“I’m not aware of the arrest of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago. If I receive further information, we shall communicate it accordingly,” Rusoke said.
Lukwago was reportedly seized by operatives of the Special Forces Command (SFC) at his residence in Wakaliga as he prepared to serve court summons in a high-profile case involving Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
According to reports, the veteran opposition politician was taken to an unknown location, and his whereabouts remain unclear.
The incident is linked to an ongoing legal battle stemming from a recent High Court directive ordering Gen. Muhoozi to file a defense within seven days over allegations of threats and human rights violations connected to opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye’s detention on treason-related charges and earlier claims of abduction.
Speaking shortly after the reported arrest, Lukwago’s wife, Nalongo Zawedde Lubawama Lukwago, said her husband was taken without any legal warrant, summons, or formal notice being presented to the family.
Lukwago, who serves as lead counsel for Dr. Besigye, had reportedly been preparing to personally serve court documents on Gen. Muhoozi in relation to Besigye’s alleged abduction and ongoing legal troubles.
The development comes amid heightened political tensions and follows public statements by Gen. Muhoozi warning individuals attempting to serve him with court papers.
With police distancing themselves from the incident and no official confirmation of Lukwago’s whereabouts, the case has sparked widespread public concern and intensified scrutiny over the handling of politically sensitive legal proceedings in Uganda.
