Police at Kira Road Police Station have arrested three people in connection with the death of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo.
The suspects have been identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, and Namukose Juliet. They are currently being held by police as investigations continue.
According to preliminary findings, Gongodyo was allegedly attacked by a mob after being accused of snatching a woman’s handbag. However, police say investigations are still ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police officers responded to the scene and rushed the injured player to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment. Despite efforts to save his life, Gongodyo succumbed to his injuries at around 7:00 p.m. on June 5, 2026.
The three suspects remain in custody and are assisting police with inquiries as detectives work to determine the events that led to the rugby star’s death.
The incident has shocked Uganda’s rugby fraternity, with tributes continuing to pour in for the fallen player.
