Two Arrested as Police Recover Decomposing Body of Kidnap Victim Lydia Sengendo

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Babirye Lydia Sengendo, a 53-year-old resident of Kigoowa, Ntinda, whose disappearance shocked family members and the wider public.

The suspects, identified as Kagga Shafiq and Ntege Abubakar, were apprehended following investigations into Sengendo’s abduction. Ntege was reportedly found hiding in Nateete and later led detectives to a remote location in Kiteredde, Kakiri Town Council.

There, officers recovered Sengendo’s decomposing body, which had been tied with ropes and abandoned in a secluded area. Investigators also discovered a freshly dug grave within the compound, believed to have been prepared for secretly burying the victim.

According to police, Sengendo was kidnapped on June 3 after boarding a taxi in Busunju, Wakiso District. Her captors allegedly demanded a ransom of UGX 19 million from her family. Despite relatives raising and paying UGX 8 million, the victim was later found dead.

The gruesome discovery has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about taxi-related kidnappings and violent crime.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the body had been transferred to the city mortuary for a postmortem examination, while the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

Police have vowed to pursue all those involved in the crime and bring them to justice.
