FDC President Amuriat Defends Anita Among, Claims Corruption Probe Is Politically Driven

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President Patrick Amuriat Oboi has come out in strong defence of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, arguing that ongoing investigations into her conduct are politically motivated rather than a genuine anti-corruption drive.

Speaking to the media, Amuriat said Among is being subjected to selective enforcement and public humiliation, insisting she deserves due process.

Amuriat claimed that the probe reflects deeper political dynamics rather than accountability efforts.

“Former Speaker Anita Among should be given justice and not scandalized the way she has been. What is happening against her is not about fighting corruption, which has existed throughout the 40 years of NRM rule. It is a fight against the level of influence she had attained,” he said.

He further argued that corruption has long been entrenched under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), questioning why similar scrutiny is now being concentrated on high-profile figures.

The remarks come as investigations into Among’s wealth and conduct in office intensify.

In May 2026, security agencies reportedly raided her residences, seized luxury assets including a Rolls-Royce valued at approximately $440,000, and widened inquiries into allegations of illicit enrichment and abuse of office.

Authorities have not publicly concluded the investigations, and no formal court determination has been made regarding the allegations.

Amuriat suggested that the probe may be tied to internal power struggles and shifting political alliances, arguing that Among’s influence during her tenure as Speaker may have made her a target.

His comments have further polarized public debate, with supporters viewing the investigations as accountability in action, while critics describe them as selective prosecution driven by political considerations.
