Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President Patrick Amuriat Oboi has criticized the government’s annual Heroes Day celebrations, arguing that funds spent on the event could be better used to address the economic struggles facing many Ugandans.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday 9th June, 2026 , Amuriat said the country should focus on pressing issues such as the rising cost of living, unemployment, and household financial challenges rather than spending resources on commemorative ceremonies.
He questioned whether national celebrations should take priority at a time when many citizens are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet.
Uganda marks Heroes Day every June 9 to honor individuals who lost their lives during the 1981–1986 Bush War. This year’s 37th anniversary was held at State House Entebbe in a scaled-down format attended by selected guests.

Amuriat also raised concerns about the process of recognizing national heroes, claiming it has become politicized over the years. He argued that the selection of heroes should be transparent, inclusive, and free from political influence.
The opposition leader’s remarks have sparked fresh debate about the significance of Heroes Day celebrations and whether government spending should be directed toward addressing the country’s most urgent economic needs.
